Real Wedding: Maggie & Casey
New Orleans is the perfect city for a totally unique wedding full of personality, and that's exactly what Maggie and Casey had in mind when they set about planning their March wedding.
Growing up I would ask my friend Sam for art on a regular basis, so she was not surprised when the call came for one more original piece. She hand painted a gouache invitation and RSVP that was totally us!
I knew I wanted mermaid cut and not strapless, so I flipped through some pictures and designed a combination of some of my favorite dresses. Last November I flew to China to visit my sister and found the perfect fabrics and tailor to make my dress. One set of measurements and 2 weeks later my dress was ready for the big day! For the bridesmaids, my sister designed dresses for all 10 women. The only input I had was that I wanted them to be different dresses in a soft antique color palette.
My dad bought seasonal flowers and helped each bridesmaid assemble a bouquet. He made mine too - long stem white roses.
We incorporated a couple New Orleans traditions, such as the bridal cake pull and a second line. For the cake pull, all 10 bridesmaids grabbed a ribbon that was baked into the bottom layer of the wedding cake. At the same time they all pulled to see what silver charm was attached, representing money, love, babies, happiness, etc. The second line was a favorite part of the reception for all of our guests. It's really just a chance to parade around waving white handkerchiefs and parasols.
